Weekly Photo Challenge: Purple
I’m still catching up on my long list of Weekly Photo Challenges. I don’t know why I hadn’t posted on the purple challenge sooner as purple is one of my favorite colors. I’m wondering if anyone can recognize what this is an image of? I was again using the panoramic option on my iPhone, this shot was a complete mistake that I ended up liking anyway.

Panoramania
I’ve been spending a bit of time playing with the panoramic function on my iPhone lately. I know that I can shoot panoramas using my DSLR, but the iPhone’s version gives some truly freaky results, plus a phone enables me to be a little more incognito while shooting.

I spent 12 minutes shooting the subway platform from a full-on position, trying to keep the perspective lines horizontally level while also trying to keep the up-sweeping movement straight at the same time. If i carried my tripod with me wherever I went, both of those things wouldn’t be an issue, but I’d miss a lot of stuff while fiddling with said tripod. So anyway, after 4 tries I started thinking about what a boring photo this was turning out to be. Next thing I knew, my train was here and I shot the above image as a last ditch effort just to get something usable. It took a matter of seconds, because I didnt want the train to leave without me. Wouldnt you know it? It turned out to be the most interesting shot of the session.
Below is the shot that gave me the “ho hums”. In my next post, I’m going to throw some of the freaky shots from the streets above.

Found: Abandoned and Abused Car

Last week, around 4 a.m., some obviosly mentally altered people drove this car into the back yard of an empty foreclosed building on my block and proceeded to set fire to it. It took the Chicago Fire Department about 30 minutes to put it out and this is what’s left. Now it’s just sitting around, licking its wounds, watching the leaves fall and generally minding it’s own business. It graciously posed for my camera phone, even though I am of the same genus and species as its abusers.
To the owner of Illinois plate R97 1695, here is your car, in Logan Square. It’s a little worse for the wear but your license plates are in good condition and maybe you want to call your people about this. Our local gang of neutered feral kitties, also known as SOFAKC (South of Fullerton Avenue Killer Cats) and that one creepy possum who rudely stares at me will be keeping an eye on it for you in the interim.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Entrance
Located just north of Ping Tom Memorial Park at 18th Street and Wentworth Avenue, this industrial building once hugged the railroad tracks, but has since been torn down. Back in the day, when this door had steps, or a loading dock, many a worker must have passed through it. Or, perhaps the red color was meant to signify something else altogether, a little naughtiness down by the railroad tracks? Well, until someone with local knowledge enlightens me, I guess it will remain a mystery.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Distorted
This post is dedicated to my friend Josh, for whom the point of a sculpture of a giant mirrored kidney bean is missed. I tried to explain that there is an interactive component to this piece, if you only view it from a block away, then yes, it’s just a big bean. Here is my least distorted image of myself and friend looking into Chicago’s misunderstood Bean at Grant Park through an 18 mm lens.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Shadow
The most interesting part of this image is the shadow area, so I cropped mercilessly. I think this may be the end of my mango phase, photographically. The eating of mangos will carry on as usual.
